A Little bit About Me

Long ago, in a galaxy far far away, where the dinosaurs roamed and oh wait...I’m not that old! Hello curious soul who has stumbled across this page about me, I am White Stars and Memories! While I do feel vaguely narcissistic writing a page entirely about myself, alas, bios for social media do not write themselves.  

 

The short version is, I’m an artist. I loved animals and coloring pages as a kid, and I decided I would spend the rest of my career life being an artist to draw them.  

 

Much longer version is I didn’t actually ever have an eye on art. Since I was a kid my main career choices were baker, or Lego Design. Baking is not something I can achieve. Sadly, I burned ninety cookies in a row; there is no redemption for me. I am a baking menace and villain! Although I can cook very well, Balsamic chicken here I come!  

 

As a kid I loved Legos, I built so much stuff out of them and actively enjoyed Lego ideas and all that jazz so I wanted to work there as a set designer. I was good, but I was never out of this world like some of the other people were, so I just enjoyed building stuff and it never turned into a serious dream for me. 

 

To add to this very long unexciting tale, I have always loved horses. The rippling power, the perfect mane, the lithe gallop as they move over ground like water over a stream, I loved it all. I devoured Margaret O. Henry as a kid. Reading about horse breeds I knew what type I wanted when I could afford such a luxurious and noble beast to ride. This is where the extremely unattractive painting of “George Washington on a White Charger,” comes into play. (I would look it up)  

 

I drew it over and over and over and over again. Something about it sparked my love of horses and drawing. Although it may not be the most beautiful, realistic, or interesting it sparked my love of art. Then, when at the hobby store, I would pass the how to draw section. For YEARS I pined after this single how to draw horses' book, but as I kid any nickel or dime I got was spent sooner than it was given, so I never purchased the book. After probably I want to say four to five years I finally coughed up the twenty dollars to purchase the how to draw book I had stared at for years. Then I drew my first semi-realistic horse. I was so proud of myself.  

 

When I drew a few more, my mother pushed me enthusiastically into art lessons. Eating every lesson up I could do hours of drawing. Pouring myself into drawing was never a problem and I ended the year with two hundred and seventy-five hours of drawing I think. After more and more hours of drawing I became confident in drawing my own subjects until I moved away from watching lessons. Going solo was one thing, but I still wasn’t great. I’ll admit I was good, but not super, so I went to an art gallery. After taking lessons for a year, I went solo.  

 

Now I’m sure there are a lot of questions on why I chose such a hippy dippy name such as “White Stars and Memories.” First reason, I’m a private person. People can know my backstory without being concerned of my identity (I'll just say I don't murder people in my free time haha). I prefer to be anonymous. Second reason is personally, I originally was going to be “White Star Art.” I wanted a name that would tell people what I do and not just "John smith" or in my case "Karen the colorer." White star stands for a white star/snip/blaze on a horse's face, but I was persuaded to add the "Memories" part to stand for all the memories I would draw for people. It’s a little anti climatic but hey, it's how I got my name. 

 

I have been a gallery artist since 2023, and I love drawing leopards, lions, and horses (Akhal-Tekes are my favorite!). I am very grateful to my mother who pushed me into my career, and I am very thankful to all the artists who supported me and gave me such good advice and feedback all those years ago. Now that I am a much better artist than I was three years ago, my focus is hyper-realistic drawings of equines, felines, and canines in colored pencil and graphite. (Although some birds do manage to sneak into the portfolio sometimes ;) 

 

In my spare time I love playing Alpha from Volume Beta and Earl Grey 3 on the piano. If I’m not lurking on the piano transcribing, arranging, or playing music pieces, I could be reading, writing, or learning about history.  

 

When I’m drawing, I’m jamming to Precipice, A Town Abandoned by Time, Alpha, Chocolatl part 1, or Dusk Rush!
